The surf around fiji is some of the best in the world and the fiji surf scene is about as relaxed as they come. A mere mention of the name ‘Cloudbreak’ would be enough to get any surfer drooling at mental images of pure clear waters and careening stand up barrels, and quite often this is the case, but although cloudbreak is a beautiful (if slightly dangerous) wave there are also a multitude of other breaks and fiji surf options off the coast, giving the lucky surfer endless reasons to get exctited in the morning.
As of July 2010 the waves in Fiji have been ‘De-regulated’ which now means breaks such as Cloudbreak, Restaurants , and Namotu are all open to the public, thanks to the Fiji tourisim minister and his ‘Surfing Decree’ which was eventually passed after heavy and persistent lobbying from the FSA or Fiji Surfing Association.
As the fiji surf site is based out of Funky Fish Surf Resort on Malolo the main breaks we surf are;
Cloudbreak - Famous for a reason and the fiji surf poster boy wave. This stunning left hander will either give you the barrel of your life or the wipeout of your nightmares. Recommended for experienced surfers but if you get it on a small day at high tide it can be fun. Just watch out for the reef. Cloud break needs a E or NE wind for offshore and generally seems to work better on a slightly dropping tide when the water pulling out of the channel meets the incoming swell and jacks it up. It can work from a small swell of a few feet all the way up to 20ft+ – if your crazy enough to try that….
Tavarua Rights – Only working on bigger swells and when cloudbreak is too big for the majority, this fast right hander breaks directly in front of Tavarua island, making for a fantastic view while your waiting for the next set. More northerly winds for offshore and can get pretty shallow anywhere after mid-tide!
Restaurants – Doesn’t work until the swell gets big enough to wrap right into the channel and needs an easterly wind to be offshore. When it does work it’s as fast and hollow as they come and has been the cause of many reef cuts. Also has a pretty good view of Tavarua but don’t get tempted to go to the resturant for a beer…. your not allowed unless your staying there!
Swimming Pools – A right hander that can be nice and mellow and is generally considered a wave to go to when everything else it to big and you just want to chill out, You’ll sometimes even see a few beginners out there. As the tide drops it can get a big heavy, but then that can be said for every wave around here when it gets shallow. Watch out for the little bulb of reef right at the end of the reef as the tide drops.
Namotu Lefts – A left hander… and one of my favourite waves. I had a great surf here after getting battered at cloudbreak. In comparison the nice easy take-offs and easy paddleout from the channel were bliss. It’s generally a lot less
critical then other breaks on a big swell as the take-off is a bit slower and the wave is generally a bit more mellow. Can get heavy on bigger swells but is the lesser of the evils. N – NE winds for offshore.
Wilkes – Another right hander. Generally a bit shifty and has a few different take off spots but can be stunning on it’s day. Also a lot heavier than people give it credit for! As with cloudbreak it can be easy to accidently get caught on the inside here. One minute you’ll be on a set wave, and just as it’s coming to the end and you’re expecting to be out in the channel you’ll look over your shoulder and realise there’s still sets wrapping around the whole reef. It can also get shallow and i’ve seen just as many snapped boards out there as cloudbreak.
Desperations – Generally considered a reef to surf when no other fiji surf breaks are working (hence the name). A ‘W’ Shape in the reef creates a selection of short right and left handers but normally only works when the swell is fairly small. Any big swell will just cause chaos on this section of reef.
